As a family-owned brewery with deep roots in Western North Carolina’s beer scene, we at Hillman Beer have participated in and enjoyed these celebrations for years. Here’s our insider guide to the annual craft beer festivals that showcase why Asheville has earned its reputation as one of America’s premier beer destinations.

Winter Festivals: Embracing the Cold with Strong Brews

The Asheville beer scene doesn’t hibernate in winter. When the Blue Ridge Mountains get a dusting of snow, our breweries bring out their heartiest offerings.

The Winter Warmer Beer Festival in late January brings together over 30 local and regional breweries at the US Cellular Center downtown. You’ll find rich stouts, barrel-aged specialties, and warming winter ales perfect for the season. What makes this festival special is its intimate feel even with a substantial brewery lineup—you can actually chat with brewers without fighting through massive crowds.

February brings the AVL Beer Week Kick-Off Festival, which despite its name, doesn’t align with the main Beer Week (more on that later). This smaller gathering at Highland Brewing offers a first look at specialty releases that many breweries are planning for the coming year.

Spring Celebrations: When Beer Season Truly Blooms

As mountain flowers begin to bloom, Asheville’s beer festival calendar really picks up steam. April brings Asheville Vintage & Rare Beer Festival, where collectors and breweries bring out aged bottles and limited releases you simply can’t find elsewhere. This ticketed event sells out quickly every year, with good reason—where else can you sample five-year vertical flights from some of the region’s best breweries?

May delivers Beer City Festival, celebrating Asheville’s repeated wins as “Beer City USA” in national polls. Held in Pack Square Park downtown, this festival features exclusively Western North Carolina breweries, giving visitors a perfect opportunity to sample the local scene all in one place. The festival coincides with the main AVL Beer Week, which brings special tappings, beer dinners, and educational events to breweries across town.

Summer Festivals: Pairing Sunshine with Craft Brews

When summer hits, Asheville’s beer festivals move outdoors to take advantage of our beautiful mountain setting. Brewgrass Festival in June combines two things Asheville does exceptionally well: craft beer and bluegrass music. Held along the French Broad River, this long-running festival offers great beer with a soundtrack of local and national bluegrass talent.

July brings the Burning Can Festival at Oskar Blues Brewery in nearby Brevard. Though technically just outside Asheville, this festival is worth the short drive for its unique combination of outdoor adventure activities, canned craft beer, and camping options. The festival grounds at the REEB Ranch provide a stunning backdrop of forests and mountains while you sample from over 50 breweries.

In August, don’t miss the Asheville Craft Beer Week, which despite its similar name to the spring event, has its own distinct identity with a focus on technical brewing innovation and industry networking alongside public tastings.

Fall Harvest: Peak Season for Beer Lovers

Fall is perhaps the most magical time to visit Asheville’s beer scene. The Oktoberfest celebration in late September transforms downtown into a Bavarian-inspired street festival with traditional German beers alongside creative local interpretations. Sierra Nevada’s Oktoberfest in Mills River offers a more expansive version with authentic German food, music, and games at their beautiful brewery grounds.

October brings the CiderFest NC, showcasing the growing hard cider movement that complements our beer scene, while Burnpile Harvest Fest at Burial Beer Co. celebrates the season with harvest ales, smoked beers, and rustic farmhouse styles in a distinctly Appalachian setting.

Small Brewery Festivals: Finding Hidden Gems

Beyond these major events, Asheville hosts countless smaller festivals throughout the year. At Hillman Beer, we participate in numerous neighborhood events that offer a more relaxed atmosphere to connect with beer lovers. These smaller gatherings often provide the best opportunity to discover up-and-coming breweries and experimental batches that aren’t widely distributed.

Our favorite under-the-radar event is the South Slope Craft Crawl each spring and fall, where a collection of breweries in the South Slope district (Asheville’s densest brewery neighborhood) collaborate on special releases available only during the event weekend.

Planning Your Festival Visit

When mapping out your Asheville beer festival trip, keep a few things in mind. Most festivals offer early access VIP tickets that, while pricier, provide shorter lines and access to special pours not available to general admission. Many festivals also partner with local hotels for package deals that include safe transportation to and from the venues.

Remember that mountain weather can be unpredictable—dress in layers, wear comfortable shoes, and bring sunscreen even for fall festivals. Most importantly, pace yourself and take advantage of the food options at these events—Asheville’s food scene is every bit as impressive as its beer.
